What Is Bike Month?

What Is Bike Month?

May is a special month to us here at Bambino Bikes. Why you might ask? Because May is Bike Month! We started this endeavor 1) because we really do love adventuring on two wheels and 2) our goal is get as many butts on bikes as possible.

The multitude of benefits from cycling could cover many many many blog posts, of which will have to come in the future, but today I’m going to cover - What is Bike Month? And why do we celebrate it?

We’re going to go WAY back to understand the answers to these questions more fully. In the early 19th century it was bikes that were the main mode of transportation and the primary motivator for paved roads in the first place. However, the roads were not well maintained and the first biking advocacy groups sprang up, to make a stand for better/smoother roads.

And before you knew it, these local advocacy groups became national programs, such as the League of American Bicyclists. This particular organization dates back to 1880 and is still active today. As the group continued to thrive and champion biking causes, sometime circa 1956 Bike Month was created by the league to promote safer riding conditions and the benefits of bicycling.

Although Bike Month does not look exactly the same today as it did back in the 50's - the ethos is still the same. “What was once solely a mode of transportation has now evolved into a sport, a hobby, a community builder and so much more.

The month of May is our time to celebrate cyclists of all walks of life - whether you have a stable of shining 2 wheels, or a beloved bike that gets you from here to there - one thing remains the same. We come together each May to celebrate the bike!

Why Are Helmets Important?
Why Are Helmets Important?

The World Health Organization wrote an extremely thoughtful document called "Why Are Helmets Needed?" where they cover 3 main aspects:

  1. Head injuries are the leading causes of death and disability globally

  2. Helmets protect your head

  3. Helmet use is effective in reducing head injuries

We linked above to the piece, but if you did nothing else, but read the 3 bulletpoints, we can conclude that helmets (worn properly) work as advertised.
